  10. MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  11. *************************************
  12. Minimum:  100 MHz processor, 16 MB RAM, 35 MB free hard disk space, 6x CD-ROM drive, Mac OS 7.1.

  14. Recommended:  133 MHz processor, 32 MB RAM, 50 MB free hard disk space, 12x CD-ROM drive, Mac OS 7.5 or better.

  17. INSTALLING AND RUNNING THE PROGRAM

  19. In order to run the program, you will first need to run the installer to setup the necessary program files on your hard drive. Double-click the "Installer" icon on Survivors CD1 to install these files.  Follow the install instructions for the application and Apple's Quicktime 3.0.2.

  21. To run the program, insert the Survivors CD1 into the CD-ROM drive and double-click the "Survivors" icon from the desktop.

  25. SYSTEM PERFORMANCE TIPS
  26. ******************************
  27. I.  Memory on PowerPC systems:
  28. For PowerPC systems with 16 MB of available built-in memory, Virtual Memory should be turned ON when using the program. To do this, go to the Apple menu and choose Memory from the Control Panels menu. Locate Available built-in memory, directly above this is Available on disk. There needs to be sufficient disk space to use Virtual Memory. Directly below the Available built-in memory is a box indicating the current Virtual Memory setting. Adjust the number to be at least 1MB larger or more than, but not exceeding two times, the Available built-in memory. Turn Virtual Memory to ON and restart the system. This will likely be a necessity even after turning off unneeded extensions (to free up memory) due to the sizes of Mac OS and Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation's "Survivors: Testimonies of the Holocaust."  If you have any questions concerning the use of Virtual Memory please consult the system manual, or the Apple Guide Topic on Memory.

  30. **Note:  In the Get Info window on a Power Mac, there is a note added for any application that is optimized for the Power Mac. If Virtual Memory (or VM) is ON this note will show how much more memory the program would need to have available if VM was OFF and if VM is OFF it will show how much less memory the program will use if VM is turned ON.

  32. If  your machine has more than 16 MB of available built-in memory and the section for Largest Unused Block is 16 MB or greater (from About This Computer) when Virtual Memory is turned OFF, we recommend keeping Virtual Memory OFF.

  34. The Modern Memory Manager in the Memory control panel should be turned ON regardless of available memory.

  36. **Note: The Modern Memory Manager is always on with system 7.6 and up and therefore not selectable.

  39. EXTENSIONS AND CONTROL PANELS
  40. **************************************

  42. 1.  Select "Hide Control Strip" from the Control Strip Control Panel.
  43. 2.  On newer Macs, (iMac/G3), when using an ATY, RageIIC_C, display card, turn off the ATI Video Memory Manager from the Extensions Manager and restart your computer.
  44. 3.  Select a setting of at least 1000's of colors (16-bit) from the Monitors Control Panel.
  45.  
  46. - Optimize the programs performance by selecting Extensions Manager (or another third-party extensions manager, such as Conflict Catcher or Startup Manager) from Control Panels under the Apple menu. Uncheck any Extensions or Control Panels that are unnecessary for basic operation of the computer and CD-ROM drive.
  47. - If an extensions manager cannot be found, place the unnecessary extensions in a folder called Extensions (disabled) and the Control Panels in a folder called Control Panels (disabled), then restart the computer.
  48. - If you have any questions about which files are necessary, please consult the manual that came with your computer.

  51. GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS

  53. I.  If the program seems to be running slowly:
  54. - Close any unneccesary applications that may be running.
  55. - The computer should have a minimum of 16 MB of available built-in memory to run the program.
  56. - If your computer, has 16 MB or more available built-in memory, try turning Virtual Memory off.

  58. II.  Screensavers
  59. If you are running a screensaver in the background and experience video and sound problems during the game, disable the screen saver and the problem should be solved. Refer to your user documentation on how to disable the screen saver.
